Whenever you are worried about your gut health and having inflammation, Dr. J and Evan are here to share five essentials that may help you.

Lessen your intake of highly processed foods, refined carbs, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol. Opt instead for anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, spices, and healthy fats but, if you suspect that several foods are triggering inflammation in your gut, it might be worth giving an elimination diet a try. It may require removing foods from your diet that you suspect are connected to your gut problems for roughly two to three weeks at a time.

In this podcast, Dr. J and Evan Brand talk about how intestinal binders are a critical part of any detox protocol. When the liver processes toxins, they get excreted through bile and to the small intestine. If the toxins are not meant to anything, most of them will get reabsorbed in the gut. It is called enterohepatic recirculation. Binders can be used to attach to the toxins to pass through the digestive tract to be eliminated.

Different binders have affinities for various toxins based on the net charge and other molecular bonds. One commonly used binder is Chlorella - a living organism that has evolved to bind only to toxic metals, not essential minerals. Because of this, it can be used long-term with no risk of nutritional deficiency over time; Charcoal - a broad-spectrum binder that will bind a little bit of everything. It means it will bind toxins, as well as vitamins and minerals. So it is suitable for acute situations, not long-term; Humic and Fulvic Acids are made of decomposed plant matter, essentially dirt. They have been shown to detox glyphosate.

The binder that suits someone can also differ significantly based on the specific load of toxin. What works well for someone can also change during different phases of treatment, especially when the root cause is identified and fixed.

Food intolerance are very common problems that can be difficult to diagnose. In this video, Dr. J and Evan explain the causes and symptoms of salicylate oxalates sensitivity. Salicylates are compounds that you can find in foods, medications, and other products that can cause adverse reactions in intolerant ones. An intolerance to these compounds is linked with a wide variety of symptoms, making it hard to identify. The most common symptoms involve the respiratory system. However, the skin and intestinal tract may also be affected.

Oxalates are often known as an anti-nutrient, as they tend to bind up some crucial nutrients in foods, which stops them from being fully absorbed. Intolerance occurs in your body when the oxalates themselves are not detoxified from the body, allowing them to build up in the tissues. A low-oxalate diet is commonly advised for joint conditions including arthritis and gout and children on the spectrum.

Most people don't realize that glyphosate is not just found in farm fields and on GMO crops but is lurking in your next-door neighbor's garage and your neighborhood park, on the local golf course, or in your kid's playground. You can find glyphosate on nearly 100 non-GMO food crops, including vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, and cereals like wheat and oats. You can find it in wine, beer, ice cream, and pretty much everything else. Also, you wouldn't imagine in a whole host of ingredients, such as corn starch, beet and cane sugar, and even honey!

Glyphosate interrupts the body's ability to turn natural sulfites from food into sulfates that the body needs to detox and stay healthy. High sulfate levels heal the gut while supporting the absorption of many vital nutrients. Sulfates assist in clear brain fog and improve memory through increased blood flow.

POTS is a known blood circulation problem indicated by two elements: a specific group of symptoms that constantly happen when standing. A heart rate suddenly increases from horizontal to standing (or as tested on a tilt table) of at least 30 bpm in adults, or at least 40 bpm in adolescents, measured during the first 10 minutes of standing.

It is a form of dysautonomia — a problem of the autonomic nervous system. This part of the nervous system regulates functions involuntarily, such as blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and sweat. The critical component of POTS is the particular symptoms and the exaggerated increase in heart rate when standing.

Management for POTS should be specific to each individual since the symptoms and underlying conditions may vary. Most patients can control the situation with food templates, exercise, and medications. Dr. J and Evan emphasize the importance of the quality of food that we eat and seek medical attention, and undergo tests that will find the disease's root cause for better understanding and achieve a healthier body.

Hey, guys! In this video, Dr. J and Evan talk about addressing gut symptoms via organic acid testing. To start with, Organic acid testing (OAT) became very popular amongst functional medicine doctors and dietitians. It is a urine-based test that gives essential information about the functioning of various bodily systems and to identify possible nutrient deficiencies, gut dysbiosis, and more.

Organic acid testing may be beneficial for people whose symptoms have not yet describe through other stool tests, blood work, or urinary hormone tests. It helps give an immense understanding of nutrient deficiencies, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolism, detoxification abilities, antioxidant status, and gut health, which trained and experienced clinicians can utilize to dive deeper.

Additionally, it helps to identify sub clinically (non-symptomatic) metabolic imbalances to PREVENT chronic illness from developing. In this podcast, Dr. J and Evan talk about the adrenal glands in our body - to produce certain hormones directly into the bloodstream. These hormones will respond to stress and other necessities to our existence. Also, they are discussing the detailed test needed to identify the root cause of problems and what other materials and hormones are essential to keep our adrenals and body healthy.

The adrenal cortex's vital hormones include: (1) Cortisol - controls our sleep/wake cycle. It is released during stress to help your body to boost energy and better handle an emergency. (2) Aldosterone helps regulate the blood pH by controlling the electrolytes' levels in the blood. (3) DHEA and androgenic steroids are precursor hormones that are converted in the testes into male hormones (androgens) and ovaries into female hormones (estrogens). (4) Epinephrine (Adrenaline) and Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline) are often activated in emotionally and physically stressful situations when your body needs additional energy sources to endure unusual strain.

To support the body naturally, Dr. J recommends using herbs such as maca and ashwagandha. Progesterone, estrogen, and estriol may be fit for a patient. However, it is essential to know that protocols may be different for every patient since presentations and lab results may differ.

Parasitic infections are a big problem in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In this video, Dr. J and Evan will share how to handle these cases. One of these is giardiasis that may cause diarrhea, gas, upset stomach, greasy stools, and dehydration; cryptosporidiosis, which may cause stomach cramps, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, weight loss, and fever; toxoplasmosis may cause flu-like symptoms, including swollen lymph nodes and muscle aches or pains that can last for over a month.

Getting to the root of poor health symptoms is foundational in functional medicine. That’s why, with low thyroid patients, functional practitioners will spend so much time working to identify the factors lurking under the surface that are causing inflammatory harm. This can be anything from poor diet to toxic exposure or even infections. However, when it comes to infection, things get more complicated and parasites are often a primary factor in low thyroid cases. Dr. J also shared that some current screening methods miss most parasites, and conventional doctors rarely test for parasites, especially in low thyroid and other autoimmune conditions. Also, parasite cleanses a general approach to eradicating infections. While that can absolutely work for some people, we have a better opportunity to design tailored approaches by using advanced testing. Once the parasite is eradicated, there is more work to be done.

Parasites cause damage that can perpetuate problems even after the infection is dealt with. It’s critical to identify the parasite and the secondary conditions that need support to heal. Different treatments work for different parasites; thus, while general parasite cleanses can sometimes help, I prefer to figure out the specific parasite type through advanced testing.

Eating a healthy diet can reduce the negative effects of stress on your body and a healthy diet builds a solid, more enduring foundation for your body by reducing oxidation and inflammation and by helping to reduce weight gain. So in this video, we have Dr. J and Evan talking about how we can handle stress while trying to stay fit and healthy.

Of course, and especially when we're extra busy and, subsequently, more likely to be stressed, eating healthy is certainly not an easy habit to maintain. For many, prepping healthy meals doesn't always fit into a busy schedule and dining out is the norm more often than not. This generally contributes to a less healthy diet. We all know how easy it is to treat ourselves to that rich, high-fat meal we have been craving — but would usually not fix for ourselves.

For this reason, building a healthy food prep habit into your daily or weekly routine can greatly improve your overall diet, and eventually lead to reduced stress levels.
